Manager Vida retires after 18 years with the PMB SPCA

2013-08-26 00:00

A LOVE for animals kept Maureen Vida working at the SPCA for 18 years and she hopes she can still continue to do so, after she officially steps down at the end of the month.

Vida spent her last day at the organisation on Friday. She worked as its public relations officer and fundraiser for 17 years and was on a one-year contract as the manager in Pietermaritzburg.

Speaking to The Witness yesterday, she said she would miss her job.

“I will miss working for animal welfare, my colleagues, friends and the members of the public. We had our ups and downs, like any other organisation.”

If she ever got the chance she would love to work again part-time for the SPCA as she is passionate about animal welfare.

“I was told that they are now looking at drafting a part-time contract for me. I still feel I have something to contribute.”

Vida said she grew up in a family where animals were loved and taken good care of and that is where she developed her passion. “What I will miss most in the SPCA is the office cat who greeted me every day and was the last to say goodbye on Friday. I loved this cat. I will miss most of the day-to-day contact with animals.

“It breaks my heart to see animals suffering and that is why I chose to help. Even though I will be at home, I will still be using my experience in the animal welfare sector to help where I can,” she said.
