Managing waste: MEC unveils plan

2009-07-30 00:00

MORE support for municipalities in handling waste management and landfill sites is on the cards, KZN MEC for Agriculture and Environmental Affairs Lydia Johnson said in her budget speech yesterday.

Her department will facilitate the development of nine district waste management plans and the establishment and ongoing support of a total of eight waste recycling projects.

Local government experts have noted that waste management is one area in which many municpalities are failing.

Johnson said that a provinicial integrated hazardous waste management plan will be produced within the next year.

Her department will also offer training to municipal staff in environmental planning to help with the drawing up of environmental spatial development plans, the MEC said.

Her aim this year is to establish a provincial committee for environmental co-ordination in the province.

Much of the Agriculture debate will cover food security projects linked to the provincial one home, one garden campaign.

There was no official mention of suspended Agriculture head, advocate Modidima Mannya, who is challenging his recent dismissal and who made public a damning letter he sent to former premier Sbu Ndebele.
