Mandela Day: Education minister announces career guidance campaign

2010-07-06 00:00

MANDELA Day, the worldwide initiative launched last year to mark former president Nelson Mandela’s birthday with social service projects, will this year feature career guidance for South African youths.

On the day, July 18, everyone is encouraged to spend at least 67 minutes in service for a community, to honour the 67 years Mandela devoted to social justice.

Higher Education and Training Minister Dr Blade Nzimande will tomorrow announce a Mandela Day career guidance campaign in tribute to Madiba’s commitment to education and youth development.

Nzimande will be calling on all professionals to pledge their 67 minutes to career guidance for matriculants, to help them make the most critical decision of their lives.

According to a departmental spokesperson, the national campaign seeks to introduce and improve career guidance for high school pupils in rural areas by presenting matriculants with vital information about post-school education and training, career choices and critical skills required in training institutions, as well as general advice on learning.
