Mandela Marathon to assist Foundation

2014-07-08 00:00

THE uMgungundlovu District Municipality (UMDM) — organiser of the Mandela Day Marathon — has partnered with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, making it the official charity for the race.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the two parties when they met in Johannesburg last week.

Municipal manager Sibusiso Khuzwayo said the main objective was to strengthen their mutual relationship to ensure that the legacy of Nelson Mandela is shared amongst all, especially the poor, downtrodden and disadvantaged.

He said the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) will be guaranteed not less than 20% of all entry fees.

Khuzwayo said this funding, to be donated towards the NMF as support of the Mandela Day Literacy Programme, could be spent within the municipality and preferably along the Mandela Day Marathon route.

NMF CEO Achmat Dangor said, “Mandela Day is a celebration of our collective power to do well and make an imprint in the world.

“All of us should add to the initiative’s momentum by telling as many people as possible about it. Use your own network of friends, media connections, corporates and organisations to get involved and make a difference,” said Dangor.

He said the UMDM in KZN initiated the Mandela Day Marathon as one of the 67 ways to change the world.

“The marathon is an initiative of the district in partnership with other stakeholders aimed at taking action to promote the objective of the Mandela Day to inspire change through sports and make the Mandela Day an every year event,” said Dangor.
