Mandela legacy lives on as celebs tackle 46664 marathon challenge

2014-09-01 00:00

CROSSING the finish line in the Mandela Marathon 10 km race was an emotional moment for Nkosi Mandla Mandela.

The late president Nelson Mandela’s grandson told The Witness: “It really has been an honour to be here. It’s a very emotional moment being here at this capture site and to see that my grandfather is still inspiring the nation.”

The race was Mandela’s second event of the weekend. On Saturday he competed in the MTB Dash, which took place in and around Lions River and catered to mountain bike riders of all abilities.

“Even though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on and he inspires us as a nation to continue striving to do better in the communities that we live in.”

Mandela was one of several famous faces taking part in the various marathon events, which included the 46664 five kilometre challenge, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km road races, 10 km, 21 km and 42 km mountain bike races and a 15 km trail run.

Alex Mthiyane, who hosts the current affairs show Indaba on Gagasi FM, said, “It wasn’t easy. I’ve done no training.”

Another star encouraging health and fitness was Siyabonga Twala, who plays Mpiyakhe Zungu in the hit soapie Isibaya on Mzansi Magic.

He said: “I’m a firm believer in anything that will keep human beings fit … people are dying from illnesses like heart disease so we need to encourage people to exercise.”

Witness columnist and radio and television personality Phindi Gule looked as fresh as a daisy at the end of her race.

A regular runner, she said it had been fun to encourage government ministers and officials to get out of the office and take part in the challenge.
