Manilall to appeal murder conviction

2011-05-31 00:00

HOWICK man Sunesh Manilall (37) has successfully petitioned the Supreme Court of Appeals for leave to appeal against his conviction for the murder of his first wife, Monika, who was shot dead in February 2006.

He will lodge an application for bail pending appeal in the Pietermaritzburg high court on Friday.

Manilall and his two co-accused — Mumtaz Osman (37), with whom he had an extra-marital affair and later married — and Victor Mbatha (31) — were each sentenced to life imprisonment by the late KZN Judge President, Herbert Msimang, in October.

Msimang found that Monika Manilall was shot dead in her home by four men who were hired for R10 000 by Manilall and Osman.

Mbatha approached the killers and helped with the arrangements for the murder and transport of the assassins.

Judge Msimang refused to grant the trio leave to appeal his judgment, but Manilall subsequently petitioned the Supreme Court of Appeals, which granted him leave to appeal to a full bench of the high court in KZN.

The appeal is likely to be heard some time next year.
