Manna from heaven — people loot groceries after truck accident

2014-03-20 00:00

IT was manna from heaven when a truck carrying groceries overturned on the N3 near Nottingham Road yesterday morning, as people helped themselves to the strewn groceries.

Robert McKenzie, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, said the accident resulted in snarling traffic for many kilometres.

“The accident involved a single truck that overturned on the roadway, resulting in the road having to be closed for a few hours. There was one patient who was seriously injured and treated by the paramedics on scene, before being transported to hospital for further care” said McKenzie.

He added that when the truck overturned, the trailer split open and the contents, which included household groceries, was strewn across the highway.

Chaos ensued when local community members and passing motorists rushed onto the scene to try and collect some of the lost load.

The cause of the accident and the events preceding it are subject to police investigation.

SAPS Midlands spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley said it is believed that the driver, who was on medication, felt drowsy and lost control of the truck.

“People started looting from the truck before the police could arrive,” said Moodley.
