Man’s body found at Edendale Hospital

2014-04-01 00:00

THE battered body of a 27-year-old man was discovered at the Edendale Hospital construction site on Sunday.

A passer-by who found the body informed the security guards there.

The police said the man had multiple injuries to his body.

Captain Thulani Zwane said it was alleged that the man was brought to hospital by a taxi, which found him lying on the Edendale road. He was admitted to the hospital but a short while later he fled from the ward.

It is believed he died in the construction site while trying to leave the hospital.

• Meanwhile, people in Bulwer yesterday accused the police there of incompetence following the disappearance of a one-year-old child who was later found dead in a stream.

The child, Nontando Cekwane, disappeared on Saturday afternoon. Her body was found on Sunday in a stream almost a kilometre from her home.

Her uncle, Musa Cekwane, said Nontando had been with other children and her maternal grandmother at the time of her disappearance.

He said the children were called in to bath in the afternoon but Nontando was nowhere to be found. The family searched through the night and she was eventually found by a local woman, face down in the water.

He said there were some injuries on her body, leading to fears that she was mutilated or was bitten by crabs, but the family said they also found a large footprint next to where the body was found, suggesting she was dumped there by an adult.

Cekwane said police did not come when called and the promised dog unit to help search for the child only arrived hours later.

Captain Thulani Zwane said Bulwer police contacted the SAPS search and rescue team, but the child had been found before they arrived.
