Man’s dream of sardines

2010-07-23 00:00

AFTER a week of chasing, a Benoni man finally crossed one dream off his “bucket list” yesterday: he saw the sardine run and came away with a bag of the fish to eat.

Brian Bell and his wife Jill started the week in Port Edward on the lower south coast and followed the shoals all the way to Durban — arriving each time just after fishermen had hauled in their nets — before they finally got a sight of the “greatest marine spectacle on Earth” at Beachwood near Virginia airport yesterday.

Bell retired as an engineer at the beginning of the year, and following treatment in recent years for skin and bladder cancer, he’s now trying to pack in experiences.

“I want to see the sardine run, the Namqualand flowers, and in December, I’m going to Kariba [in Zimbabwe] to catch tiger fish,” he said.
