Maqongqo pupils at risk on roads

POLICE are investigating a case of culpable homicide after eight-year-old Sandile Zondi was killed by a vehicle while returning home from school on Tuesday afternoon.

The Grade 1 pupil at Maqongqo Primary School was crossing the road when he was hit by the vehicle. Eyewitness Ncamisile Khumalo, who is also incidentally a friend of the boy’s mother Sibongile, said the boy died in her arms at the police station.

“I heard the bang. I went back to the gate and saw a group of schoolchildren scattered all over the place and the car had stopped not far from the scene.

“On close inspection I discovered that the young boy was Sandile, my friend’s eldest son,” said Khumalo.

She said she and the driver of the vehicle rushed the boy to the Bishopstowe police station where an ambulance was called, but the boy was declared dead on the ambulance’s arrival.

“I was still holding him on my lap when his last breath came out and I was left with the heavy and difficult task of breaking the news to his mother,” said Khumalo.

The boy’s mother could not be reached for comment.

An employee at Maqongqo Primary who asked not to be named said in another recent incident a boy was hit by a bus and has since been suffering with eye problems.
