Marathon memorabilia abound

2010-03-04 00:00

IN today’s profile for The Witness Pietermaritzburg Museum Passport Project, we take a closer look at the Comrades Museum, which was established in 1987 and which is situated at Comrades House at 18 Connaught Road, Pietermaritzburg.

The museum, which is in a beautifully restored old Victorian home, contains race memorabilia and personal treasures belonging to many of the top athletes who have competed in the race.

There is also a comprehensive gallery of past winners, a detailed scale model of the route and exhibits representing the history and achievements of the race, its runners, organisers and supporters.

The museum, which is committed to promoting the ideals of the Comrades Marathon, not only celebrates the race history, but also provides an interesting perspective on South African sporting progress throughout the country’s development.

It also boasts a valuable archive of press cuttings, organising documentation, race footage and photographs, as well as the race trophies and shields which are awarded each year.

The Comrades Museum is open from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 1 pm. After-hours visits are welcome with prior arrangement. Entrance is free.
