Marauders respect bearded vulture

2011-05-20 00:00

THE Midlands Marauders go into round one of the Ebbo Bastard Inter-Sub Unions Trophy with a difficult assignment against the Northern KZN Lammergeyer.

The Lammergeyer, or bearded vulture, is found in northern KZN and is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of dead animals.

The description is apt, as the Lammergeyer will be looking to kill off the Marauders upfront in the tight five before setting their loose forwards and lively backs against a home side that will be on the back foot.

The teams meet at 3 pm at Woodburn Stadium tomorrow and Marauders captain and eighthman Leon Stevens’s tight five can expect an onslaught from the first whistle.

Head coach Beans Bateman’s side is predominantly made up of Maritzburg Collegians players with PMB Varsity players filling the crucial eight-nine and centre positions.

On Wednesday, unbeaten KZN First Division log leaders PMB Collegians withstood threats from all sides before coming out 28-26 winners over home side and title hopefuls Hillcrest.

There is increasing concern among a number of observers that head coach Rinier Bosman’s disciplined Collegians line-up, who are enjoying a wonderful season and destroying everyone in front of them, are being targeted in an effort to knock them off their pedestal by fair means or foul.

How else does one explain yet another lopsided penalty count and other anomalies when Collegians are the best prepared, most organised and professional club in this division?
