Margate: man robbed, cops indifferent

2011-11-02 00:00

A MAN from Oslo Beach was assaulted and robbed in Margate in the early hours of last Saturday. But that wasn’t the only shock he got that day. He claims that two police officers on duty refused to assist him after the incident.

Lucas Visagie (33) said he left a nightclub at about 1am. Just after he had called his sister on his cellphone to meet her, two men approached and hit him over the head. They then dragged him on to the beach and assaulted him again.

He said he was assaulted and left semi-conscious when the robbers fled with his cellphone, wallet and shoes.

He managed to pick himself up and run for help. He flagged down a police vehicle close to the beach and told the officers of the robbery, hoping to search the area for the suspect, but they said “they could not help me”. The officers told Visagie to report the incident at the police station. Visagie says when he eventually got to the station, the officer on duty then refused to add her colleagues’ indifference to his statement.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Phumzile Makaula said any police officer is obliged to assist citizens when approached for help.
