Margate student pilot escapes unscathed as plane hits fence

2009-10-15 00:00

A STUDENT pilot escaped injury when his light aircraft hit the fence at an airfield in Margate yesterday.

“The pilot lost control of the aircraft when he was trying to land and collided with the airport fence,” said Netcare 911 spokesman Jeff Wicks.

According to Zero Four Flight School director Evan Roberts, a student pilot, Theo Roos, was training in the airfield when the plane crashed into the fence.

He said the “incident” is not serious. “It was not a crash, but a minor incident. Roos was training to land and take off and the plane hit the fence,” said Roberts.

Roos said, “I was flying solo, doing the touch-and-go exercise, when something went wrong. It felt like the left brake jammed, and I hit the fence.”

He said the incident gave him an opportunity to apply emergency procedures.

The plane left the runway and ploughed through the grass before slamming into a perimeter fence.

“The pilot sustained minor injuries and declined treatment and transport to hospital,” said Wicks.

Aviation experts are investigating the cause of the accident.
