Margate surgeon’s race with one kidney to promote organ donation

2011-07-08 00:00

MARIUS du Preez, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Netcare Margate Hospital, will be aiming to raise awareness for organ donation whilst striving to complete his sixteenth Berg River Canoe Marathon when the 50th edition of the race gets under way in Paarl on July 13.

What will make this year’s four-day, 240km event even more taxing than his 15 previously completed marathons is the fact that Du Preez will be taking on the challenge with one kidney less.

Du Preez (49), who resides in Umtentweni, donated one of his kidneys in 2008 and has since devoted much of his time to show people that one can still live an active life.

With the help of his wife Yolande and friends, Du Preez recently travelled around South Africa on a motorcycle to raise awareness for organ donation and signed up 3 254 new organ donors.

He plans to continue his campaign during the Berg River Canoe Marathon and the event organisers and sponsors have agreed to allow Du Preez to partake and address fellow participants at the information gathering prior to the start of the marathon. To become an organ donor is very simple and it could change somebody’s life. If you are interested in becoming a donor or would like to know more about organ donation, contact Du Preez at on 039 317
