Margate visitors stabbed

2012-05-09 00:00

A FUN night out in Margate ended in a near fatal attack on two men visiting from Durban on Saturday morning.

Michael Prinsloo (48) and Kobus Claassen (33) were staying at an establishment on Panorama Parade at the weekend while doing contract work.

They had bought food from a fast-food outlet on Marine Drive at about 2.30 am on Saturday.

Prinsloo was walking down Panorama Parade while Claassen waited to collect the food.

Prinsloo said two men suddenly appeared and attacked him. He was stabbed in the groin and lower abdomen.

Prinsloo struggled with his attackers as they tried to steal his wallet and cellphone.

“I was near Wimpy when two men appeared out of nowhere. “They stabbed me twice and I went into foetal position,” said Prinsloo.

“They kept trying to reach my pockets, but because I was crouching they could not reach.

“I screamed for someone to help me,” he said.

A few moments later Claassen came running to his friend’s aid. The attackers stabbed him in the arm and ran away.

“Kobus was stabbed quite deep in the arm,” said Prinsloo.

At the time of the attack Prinsloo thought the men had a knife, but a doctor who treated both men said they appeared to have been stabbed with a broken bottle.

“The doctor said there were other lacerations surrounding the stab wound and that it may have come from a broken bottle.”

Prinsloo said he visited Margate often for work purposes and this was the first time such an incident had taken place.

“It was an isolated incident. I cannot say that Margate is not safe.

“The entire world isn’t safe. All I can do is warn people to be careful and not to wander around late at night,” said Prinsloo.

He had not opened a case with Margate police at the time of going to press.
