Maritzburg Day set to get city residents rocking at the Botanical Gardens

2011-09-19 00:00

MARITZBURGERS will rock to one of the best line-ups of live music around on the inaugural Maritzburg Day, Saturday, October 1 at the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens in Mayor’s Walk.

The venue, which has a capacity of 4 000, is designed to suit all ages, music genres and most certainly families.

Impi Concerts (organisers of the Johnny Clegg and Mango Groove concerts in Pietermaritzburg over the past two years) have gone big, with the announcement that South Africa’s top band, The Parlotones, will be headlining the event.

Phew, The Parlotones in our own backyard? What great news, but it doesn’t end there.

They are supported by the ever popular Plush from Cape Town — a band that has huge support and roots in Pietermaritzburg.

Added to these two mainline acts is Jeremy Loops and Co from Cape Town.

He blends acoustic guitar, saxophone and beat boxing.

South African’s top reggae band, The Meditators, will also perform.

Maritzburg Day is about getting the people of the City of Choice together in a great venue, and it’s not just about the music.

A 40-stall flea market will line the plane tree avenue, and a fully supervised and equipped kids’ zone will also be available for parents to let their children play under supervision.

So, Saturday, October 1 certainly is a date you want to keep open for the whole family. Bring your chairs, blankets and food (note that no drinks will be allowed into the venue, but a fully stocked bar will be available inside) and make sure that you support this initiative.

The thought of having an annual celebration of Maritzburg, its history, its world famous events and schools, all with added benefit of some of SA’s top live music acts in a superb venue, should excite not only the residents of PMB, but also people from across the Midlands and even East Griqualand. Maritzburg Day is a must!

Tickets are R160 for adults, R50 for chilrden between 8-12, and free for chilrden under eight, and can be purchased online at www.webtickets.co.za or from Parklane Spar in Pietermaritzburg. — Supplied.
