Maritzburg United look to Zimbabwean striker for more fire power

2012-01-10 00:00

MARITZBURG United have resumed training after a lengthy Christmas break and have been joined by Zimbabwean striker Cuthbert Malajila.

Malajila will be on trial with the Team of Choice for the next 10 days and an offer could be made for him at the end of this period.

The Zimbabwean international plays for Dynamos in his homeland and attended a trial at United under the reign of Ernst Middendorp in July 2010.

“At that time an offer was made, but an offer from Tunisia came in and the highest bidder won,” United’s chairperson Farouk Kadodia told The Witness yesterday.

Malajila then returned home to Zimbabwe before moving to Tunisian side Club Africain.

He was later loaned to Libya’s Al Akhdar, but has since returned to Dynamos where he has been reported to be unhappy.

United are in desperate need of extra depth in the striking department after they struggled to score in the second quarter of the season and went over 400 minutes of PSL football without finding the back of the net at one stage.

The scoring responsibility has fallen largely on the shoulders of Diyo Sibisi, who battled his way through an ankle injury all season.

Club captain Fadlu Davids has been coach Ian Palmer’s other option up front, but the 30-year-old has scored just one goal this season against Ajax Cape Town back in August.

Kadodia remained quiet about other players on United’s shopping list, but added that another striker from Nigeria is set to join the club on trial in the coming days.

Earlier in the season, Nigeria’s Jacob Abobade was touted as the answer to United’s striking woes when his services were secured by the club, but he has failed to prove his fitness and seems to have fallen out of the club’s plans.

Kadodia also squashed media reports that he was set to lose winger Felix Obada to an overseas club. Reports had suggested that Obada had attracted interest from Belgium and Scandinavia.

“There has been some interest shown, but at this stage there have been no formal offers and Felix will remain with us,” he said.

United next face Wits in Johannesburg on February 15 after the sides played to a 2-2 draw on the opening day of the season in Pietermaritzburg.
