Maritzburg United to play pirates at Harry Gwala

2011-07-19 00:00

MARITZBURG United fans will be pleased to know that PSL champions Orlando Pirates will be playing their league fixture against Ian Palmer’s side on August 24 at the Harry Gwala stadium.

The fixture was initially in doubt, as United chairperson Farouk Kadodia was approached by officials at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium who asked that Maritzburg play their home matches against Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and one other top-eight PSL side at the Port Elizabeth World Cup arena.

Kadodia, after negotiating with the stadium’s officials, has now agreed to stage home matches against Chiefs (November 1), Bloemfontein Celtic (March 14) and Mamelodi Sundowns (April 21) at the PE venue.

The decision means that United will play 12 of their 15 home games in Maritzburg.

Last week coach Ian Palmer explained that the decision to move the three games outside of the city was “business” and he urged fans to understand that it was for the benefit of the club.

It is believed that the United are likely to receive an appearance fee of around R1 million, before costs, for each of the three matches to be played in PE.

The team of choice will play a friendly today against AmaZulu at Carter High School.
