Marriage to teen halted

2012-12-04 00:00

A PENDING marriage between a man over the age of 40 and a 14-year-old girl in KwaMaphumulo was stopped in its tracks this weekend.

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) was approached with a complaint from a concerned community member.

CGE provincial manager Makhosazana Khumalo said the man was due to marry the girl’s older sister (20), who he had chosen in church.

“However, it was found out that the 20-year-old was pregnant, and was carrying another man’s child, and had run off. As lobola [R29 500] had been paid, the family told him that he could have his money back, but he said he wanted a wife, not money, and the teenager was then chosen to take her sister’s place,” said Khumalo.

On Saturday, the police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit found the girl and placed her in the care of social workers.

Khumalo said the girl’s family was not keen on the idea of her marriage, but had been pressured by church leaders in the community.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said no criminal offence had been committed and therefore, there would be no investigation.

“The situation was resolved amicably and will be monitored for strict compliance,” he said.
