Maseko’s protection questioned

2012-01-19 00:00

MUNICIPAL workers ask why the former Acting Msunduzi municipal manager (MM), Thokozani Maseko continues to have bodyguards while he is now the process manager for water and sanitation.

Maseko was offered security by the municipality during the time it was under administration. There were alleged threats on his life as an acting MM as he was working with the Provincial Intervention Team (PIT).

At the time opposition parties objected, calling it a waste of manpower for two people to be taken out of the PIT team to perform bodyguard duties. The parties felt the pair’s time would have been better spent helping with investigations to unravel what went wrong at the municipality.

Maseko declined to comment on the matter and referred questions to current municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi, who said the security agencies should conduct threat analyses to determine whether the threat is still there or not.

“The decision to allocate him bodyguards was taken before my time. I don’t think that it would have been done if the risk was not real,” he said.
