Master Class paddlers rule Nobby Nel

2010-10-12 00:00

Almost 250 paddlers turned out on Sunday for Umvoti Canoe Club’s Nobby Nel Memorial race. Run on the ever popular 24km C Class Upper Umgeni course from Albert Falls Wier to Thornvale Farm, the race is the traditional Dusi season opener following last week’s Hansa Powerade Fish.

It also draws a large number of new paddlers beginning their preparation for the Landrover 50 Miler in December and The Unlimited Dusi at it’s new date in mid February.

Promoted in the Dusi main class, which is K1 this season, the race was won by Sub-Veteran Shaun Baird, taking full advantage of the absence of many of the traditional bog “names”. Sub-Master Glen Hilliar was second just ahead of Veteran Gavin Tarr making it a 1-2-3 for Master Class paddlers.

Donna Winter took the second place in the women’s race after an unlucky swim during the tricky starting procedure used for this race where the paddlers line up in small batches of around 12 boats facing upstream. At the go they sprint about 30m upriver to a flag marker where they then turn around and set off in the more conventional direction – downstream. All this in an attempt to spread the boats out a little before the Albert Falls Wier just 100m downstream. Jordan Peek took the third place in the women’s race and second in the girls ahead of the leading “masters” woman, Solly Peckett.

With the Unlimited Dusi moving to February next year the pressure on the race calendar is a little less this season and, apart from the Schools Umgeni race on Saturday, next weekend is free in KZN giving local paddlers the chance to travel to Mphumulanga for the two day A Class Lowveld Croc.
