Matric driver of fatal taxi

2014-11-15 00:00

ONE child was killed and several were injured when a taxi carrying schoolchildren overturned in Howick yesterday morning.

The taxi, apparently being driven by a matric pupil with a driver’s licence, veered off Tweedie Road and crashed through electric fencing and into a house in the Lanzerac Gardens complex.

A seven-year-old Cosmo Primary School pupil died instantly.

The Howick Fire Department, who were the first at the scene, worked to free and stabilise the injured until paramedics arrived.

ER24 paramedic Paul Knoesen said the child who was killed died instantly and one was in a serious condition. The other children sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The owner of the house, who would not be named, said this was the second accident on their usually quiet road in three years.

“I heard the commotion and I knew it was a crash. Luckily the bollards and water tank I have just put up deflected the car, otherwise it would have crashed straight into my house,” said the woman.

A police source said the taxi driver was taken to hospital by family as he was traumatised by the incident. The visibly shaken driver sustained no injuries in the crash.

According to a source at Cosmo Primary, the driver was new and had just started his job earlier in the week. The source said the driver was still in high school, but confirmed he had a driver’s licence.

Cosmo Primary principal Suveer Nunkumar said Department of Education officials had arrived at the school early yesterday and counselled pupils and teachers affected by the crash.
