Matrics not happy like a room without a roof

2015-01-21 00:00

SINGER Pharrell Williams once explained his lyric, “Happy like a room without a roof”, was a methapor for “one’s space without a limit”, but the new matric pupils at the Mehlokazulu High School in Imbali would prefer to put a lid on it.

Gusting winds during a storm over the weekend destroyed a large portion of the school’s roof, leaving three matric classrooms exposed to today’s hot sun and the expected thunder storms during the week. A large number of books were also damaged.

Yesterday the Education Department and school management were working to accommodate their newly displaced matrics. Principal Thami Shabalala told The Witness the Education Department was informed about the incident a few hours after the storm.

“Officials came to the school yesterday to do an assessment. The block was used by matrics and we hope the classrooms will be repaired promptly because the space is sorely needed,” he said.

Education spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa said the department expediting the matter so that everyone at Mehlokazulu High School can have classes “conducive for effective teaching and learning”.

Meanwhile, the matrics will be singing the second line of Williams’s song … “Sunshine she’s here, you can take away.”
