Maxwell continues to set SA athletics on fire

2010-06-29 00:00

WITH KZN road racing sacrificed for the World Cup, Saturday’s Yellowwood Park Cross-country event attracted a good field of contenders, who were able to enjoy running on a glorious winter’s afternoon.

Thubalethu Phaku dominated the senior men’s race, opening almost 400 metres over Correctional Services’ Sifuninkosi Ngqoyingile to complete the four-lap course in 41 minutes and 10 seconds. Collegians Harriers’ Khulekani Ngubane was third in 42 minutes 51 seconds, holding off KZN Striders’ Siphwe Zwane.

Justin Hand, who has been sharpening his running in the Sunrise beach running series, was first over the line in the eight-kilometre age group event with Nedbank’s Sibusiso Htag only 100 metres adrift and first in the 40-44 category

Danielle Adlam was the fastest woman of the day after an early tussle with Savages’ Makhosi Mhlongo. The Boxer athlete came through the line in a useful 32 minutes 14 seconds to Mhlongo’s 32:41 with another Boxer athlete, Tholakele Sigududu, third.

Sigududu’s eight-kilometre open performance undoubtedly suffered from her earlier race in the masters four kilometre, where she finished fifth overall and second in the 40-44 age group in 18:50. Fastest around the two-lap course was Pinetown’s Lise Muchna, who recorded 16:50 to win the 40-44 category, while Kylie Griffin was second and first in the 45-49. Hleziphi Ncayiyana of the local Nedbank team was the first in the 35-39.

Tanith Maxwell won the Eersteriver 15 km outside Cape Town, setting a new personal best, which indicates she is on form for the upcoming SA Half-marathon Championships in Port Elizabeth early next month.

Finishing in 51:13, Maxwell cut a massive two minutes seven seconds from her previous best.

Maxwell has been focusing on her speed in recent weeks with a view to targeting a 72-minute half-marathon personal best around the flat fast Motherwell course outside Port Elizabeth.

Her next marathon will be finalised only after the announcement of the Commonwealth Games team, as she already has invitations for both the Berlin and Frankfurt marathons.
