Maxwell races into eighth spot in berlin

2010-09-27 00:00

SOUTH Africa’s leading marathoner, Tanith Maxwell, raced into eighth place in the 37th Berlin Marathon yesterday morning, recording a new personal best time of 2 hours 32 minutes 33 seconds behind winner Aberu Kedebe of Ethiopia.

Kedebe, who took the tape in 2 hrs 23 min 58 sec, was a full minute ahead of countrywoman and pre-race favourite Bezunesh Bekele, with Japan’s Tomo Morimo filling the final podium spot in 2:26:10.

Running in cool, consistently rainy conditions, only the top five women dipped under the 2:30 barrier.

Durban-based Maxwell spent most of the race in the top 10. After a relatively conservative start that saw the Boxer runner go through five kilometres in 18:07, Maxwell picked up the pace through to 15 km, which she covered in 53:19 on her way to a 75:24 split at halfway.

Consistent running took her to 2:24:23 at the 40 km board, where she slowed to 3 min 44 sec per kilometre through to the finish, crossing the line just a few strides behind Brazil’s Adriana da Silva.

The time was a two-minute improvement on Maxwell’s previous best set in London in April, where she finished 15th. The 34-year-old athlete was third in her age group.
