Mayhem after driver runs down woman

2014-08-19 00:00

A WOMAN has died after allegedly being hit by a motorist on Chatterton Road yesterday morning.

The woman (31) was crossing the road outside the Absa complex when she was allegedly run over by a passing motorist in a white Mercedes SUV who took off shortly after, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.

He then allegedly drove around the traffic circle, taking Armitage Road, where he crashed into two other cars on the road before plunging into Land Rover’s dealership, where at least two cars were damaged.

According to Andrew Rogers of ER 24, who was at the scene, the driver, as well as the occupants of the two other vehicles, sustained minor injuries and were taken to MediClinic Hospital in a stable condition.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the woman suffered from severe head trauma and multiple fractures on her legs. “The patient went into cardiac arrest at the scene and paramedics worked fervently to resuscitate her. After some time, they managed to stabilise the critically wounded woman.”

Botha said after she was placed on a ventilator, she was taken to hospital where she later died.

Nilen Singh, who made the call to the emergency services, expressed his frustration with the emergency call centre. “As soon as the accident happened, I called 10177 where they were unable to assist me because they were based in Durban. They provided me with a local number to contact instead. I feel that if the emergency call centres were more helpful, the woman’s life may have been saved because emergency services only arrived 15 minutes after my call,” said Singh.

The incident is currently under investigation by local authorities.

Attempts to get comment from the police, the provincial health department and Land Rover were unsuccessful. The manager of Land Rover in Armitage Road declined to comment when approached.
