Mayor addresses taxi rank filth

2008-06-05 00:00

Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo has called for an immediate establishment of a task team to deal with the filthy state of the taxi rank in the basement of the Professor Nyembezi Centre.

Hlatshwayo told the executive committee (Exco) yesterday that she met with taxi owners who demanded action.

ANC councillor Themba Zungu told the committee that he went there with Deputy Mayor Mervin Dirks and the informal traders were conducting their business surrounded by pools of sewage because pipes above are leaking. He said if nothing is done about the situation soon the councillors will be accused of not doing their jobs.

Zungu said taxi owners and operators also complained about security and maintenance of the rank.

Chairman of the Msunduzi One Regional Taxi Association, Boy Zondi, said they raised the matter with Hlatshwayo and have threatened to occupy the new Freedom Sqaure rank if their complaints are not urgently met.

“We complained about the cleaning of the rank because sometimes three days would pass without being cleaned. Also we complained about the security guards. They must go because instead of curbing crime they are causing it,” said Zondi.

He said the taxi council want to employ security and maintenance companies, but the municipality must pay them. Councillor Gerrit Meyer (ANC) said the situation of informal traders cannot be allowed to get out of hand.
