Mayor apologises to northern suburbs for power outage

2013-08-23 00:00

MSUNDUZI Mayor Chris Ndlela yesterday thanked the residents of the northern suburbs for their patience during the recent power outage. He also apologised to them on behalf of the municipality, saying that it was one of the longest outages yet in the city.

Ndlela thanked the team that worked round the clock and municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi for a job well done. The mayor said the only blot was the rumour-mongering that went on.

“There were messages going out from troublemakers and perhaps people who may have wanted to profit from the situation, politically or otherwise, saying that the power failure was going to last three days and more,” he said.

Ndlela said it was important that he took this opportunity, on behalf of the leadership of the council, to apologise to the affected communities for the power outage.

“We are very sorry for what happened, it was a wake-up call for all of us. We need to devise preventative measures,” he said.

According to the mayor, not only must existing sub-stations be upgraded, but there was a need for new sub-stations to be built as well.

Councillor Mergan Chetty, on behalf of the DA, also condemned the rumour-mongering that aimed at creating a false sense of chaos and anxiety.
