Mbanjwa and Adie take honours in Hi-Q Midmar Mini

2011-01-18 00:00

MICHAEL Mbanjwa recorded his first victory of the Unlimited Dusi season on Sunday with a win in the Hi-Q Midmar Mini Marathon. Not an easy win though, and a race-long tussle with Eric Zondi was only settled by just over a second in the final sprint.

Zonele Nzuza took third place 90 seconds later. Development paddlers dominated the race for the second year, taking nine of the top 10 places, seven of them being part of Martin Dreyer’s Change-a-Life programme at Nagle Dam, including the winning junior Mmeli Cele. Murray Haw and Donovan Wewege of Maritzburg College took the minor placings in the boy’s race.

Abby Adie continued her dominance of the women’s category, winning by almost seven minutes from Hillary Pitchford, with her twin sister Alex taking the third place. Emma Horner made an exciting comeback to take the girls’ race by seven minutes from Brittany Petersen and the U16 winner, Bianca Haw.

The special K3 course, which excluded the long portages, attracted just two boats with Tyler Bain, Susan Walker and Owen Hemingway winning from Pooch Ovenstone, Nolan Diaz and Connel Adey. For the 2012 race, hosts, Fezela Canoe Club and sponsors Hi-Q have applied for provincial championship status for the K3 class which will hopefully increase the entry numbers in the normally popular category. An excellent field of 378 paddlers took part in the 23km classic.
