Mbanjwa murder: two arrested

2011-01-27 00:00

POLICE learned that the ill-gotten gains from the murder of a Pietermaritzburg gospel singer was only R100 after they recovered the victim’s laptop on Tuesday.

A Willowfountain resident told the police that he had bought the laptop from a suspect for this amount.

Police have arrested two suspects in the murder, one of them a teenager. The first suspect, a 42-year-old man, was arrested in Imbali at about 5 pm on Monday.

This was followed by the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in Azalea at 10 am yesterday.

They are accused of having shot and killed Nkosinathi Jeffery Mbanjwa (26), a member of the popular local gospel group, Living Sound, in his Willowfountain home on January 17.

A police source said one of the suspects was recently paroled on a 25-year prison sentence, which he served after committing a serious crime in Hammarsdale.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said the suspects are due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court. She confirmed the police are looking for more suspects.

She appealed to anyone with information that will assist in the investigation to call Warrant Officer Protas Mtungwa at 033 398 9752 or 082 491 9510 or Warrant Officer Doctor Bheki Cele at 073 017 2307.

Anonymous callers should phone Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
