Mchunu visits sex scandal school

2009-06-23 00:00

TROUBLED Makhumbuza High School in Umlazi received a visit from the province’s MEC of Education, Senzo Mchunu.

Education spokesman Sihle Mlotshwa said the purpose of yesterday’s visit was to brief the parents and all the relevant stakeholders about the latest developments, as well as to encourage teachers who remain at the school and who feel stigmatised by the sexual harassment cases brought against suspended colleagues that cloud the school.

“The community thinks they are all like that, which has demotivated many of them,” said Mlotshwa.

“The MEC was there to thank them for the way they have handled the matter, and also to sympathise with them,” he added.

Mchunu said the prosecution team, appointed early this month, is working around the clock to finalise the matter.

The department is also working on mobilising a community campaign to address the issue of sexual harassment against pupils.

“We want to involve all the sectors of our society and the community at large to protect our children and empower them to stand up and speak out against such abuse.”

“We want to instil back the pride and the high standard of learning at Makhumbuza … so we return the school to its former glory,” said Mchunu.
