Medical council clears Karabus

2013-03-20 00:00

CAPE TOWN — “It is fantastic and about time.”

This was the reaction yesterday by Capetonian Professor Cyril Karabus when he got an unexpected summons to court in Abu Dhabi.

“There the medical council said I had done everything possible to save the life of my patient,” Karabus told sister paper Die Burger.

Deputy foreign minister Marius Fransman announced yesterday that Karabus had been exonerated.

The professor (77) has been prevented from leaving the United Arab Emirates since last August.

He was convicted in absentia in 2003 in connection with the death of a three-year-old who died of leukaemia under his care while he was working in the UAE in 2002.

Karabus, a specialist paediatric exonerate, was arrested while in transit in the UAE after attending his son’s wedding in Canada.

“The medical council has exonerated me, but a judge still has to decide whether he agrees,” Karabus told Die Burger.

His daughter, Sarah, said the family were relieved, but would only celebrate once her father was on a plane home.

He said the worst part of his ordeal was boredom. He has been staying with a friend for five months, and said even the jail was reasonably comfortable.
