Meet SA’s first black ‘Playboy’ cover girl

2011-04-30 00:00

"I HAVE good tits and I thought, ‘Why not capture the moment?’” That’s what made Tshego Seakgeo (21) agree to feature on the cover of Playboy magazine.

She makes her debut next month as the very first black Playmate to grace the covers of Playboy South Africa.

In case you are wondering, her boobs are real.

And don’t be fooled by anything else about her. There is more to this vivacious beauty than just her looks. She is smart, energetic and outspoken.

Standing at a willowy 169 cm and weighing 49 kg, this Soweto-born model is reading for a degree in international studies and communication with a double minor in criminology and journalism with Unisa.

“I have brains so why not study? But I also have tits to do Playboy,” she frankly told Weekend Witness.

“Playboy is a huge brand. I see being a Playmate as a huge platform for me to get my views across. I think once people know your face, it is easier for you to support the charities you want and get your voice out there.”

When she started a professional modelling career less than a year ago, Seakgeo was not looking to be a Playmate, let alone the first black one. It was through a friend that she found out about the casting.

One becomes a Playmate by entering a casting call via the Playboy website.

The castings are held in Johannesburg and Cape Town monthly.

Danni Theart, executive assistant for Playboy SA, described Seakgeo as a real ambassador for the brand. She said they were not particularly looking for a black Playmate but rather for the best candidate from the casting call entries.

Playboy SA’s market among blacks is small, Theart concedes, but it is a potential growth area and irrespective of race, their readers all love beautiful women.

The magazine was first published in South Africa from 1993 until 1996, and was relaunched this month.

Model Tracy McGregor made the very first SA cover. South Africans who have featured in the international edition include Charlize Theron, Candice Boucher and Amanda de Waal.

Besides being paid a fee to be on the cover, Seakgeo will be Playboy’s ambassador for the next 12 months and stands a chance to become Playmate of the Year. That would will win her a trip to the Playboy mansion in the U.S. and launch her international career.
