Meeting to tackle hike by Eskom

2010-03-18 00:00

ELECTRICITY tariff hikes will be the subject of a public meeting organised by the Pietermaritzburg Agency for Christian Social Awareness (Pacsa) on Thursday next week.

Pacsa project organiser Vela Dlamini said the meeting will be held at the city hall at 6 pm.

The purpose will be to discuss the latest electricity tariff increases of 24,8% from April 1.

Dlamini said representatives from Eskom, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa), Msunduzi Municipality, Cosatu and other civil society organisations have been invited to the meeting to engage directly with the public.

Nersa has approved electricity tariff hikes for Eskom of 24,8% effective from April 1, 25,8% in 2011 and 25,9% in 2012.

Eskom has argued that the hike is necessary to fund its R385-billion expansion plan.

A SA Communist Party spokesman, Malesela Maleka, recently referred to the increase as a “catastrophic betrayal” of the poor.

The discussion will, among other things, focus on the role of community members before and after the adoption of such strategies; the practice of Eskom charging industrial consumers less than a third of what residential consumers pay per kilowatt of electricity; and a number of other issues affecting the community.
