Megastar cast put to good use in superb film

REVIEW: ‘RAJNEETI’

MAVERICK film director Prakash Jha’s Rajneet i, in a nutshell, is inspired by the Mahabharata. He spins a plot inspired by feuding brothers, dynastic rule and electoral politics with his megastar cast.

We have a family divided by political feud. The Pratap (Pandavas) brothers — Samar (Ranbir Kapoor) and Prithvi (Arjun Rampal) on one side and Kaurava — Veerandra (Manoj Bajpai) and his “dalit” friend Sooraj (Ajay Devgan) on the other.

Trouble starts when Veerandra’s father is paralysed and the reins of the Rashtravadi Party fall into the hands of Prithvi and not Veerandra. This is followed by a dirty game of politics in which Veerandra is blinded by greed and power as he believes he was born to rule. He tries to put an end to his political rivals’ careers. This is followed by a complex game of political strategem and reeks of the staples of good drama.

Kapoor, Rampal and Bajpai are brilliant. Devgan was very restrained in his performance. Nana Patekar gives a superb performance, and Katrina Kaif was terrific in the second half.

Jha uses his megastar cast and succeeds in directing a superb film that will intrigue and entertain you. Rajneeti is a brilliant film and should not be missed.
