THE Nashua Maritzburg United High Schools Soccer challenge has seen 16 schools cut down to eight as the first round of the tournament took place at the Ohrtmann Road complex in the city last week.

In the biggest match of the first round, last year’s champions Mehlokazulu Secondary School beat last year’s runners-up Maritzburg College 2-0 to book their place in the last eight.

There were also good wins for Carter High School, who triumphed 1-0 over Intsika High, and the highly fancied Alexandra High School, who overcame a courageous Maritzburg Christian School 3-2.

The quarter-finals, of what is now the city’s premier football competition at school level, will take place next month, and Mehlokazulu are now outright favourites to lift the trophy for the second year running.
