Melanie Lowe proposes to woman of her dreams

FORMER Idols contestant Melanie Lowe has finally proposed to the woman of her dreams — and on the big day, she’d like both her parents to walk her down the aisle.

Lowe, who made it to the final of the first season of the M-Net show,

recently announced on her website that not only is she gay, but that she had proposed to the woman that she’s been seeing for the past year, Angela Brest.

Lowe said she decided to make her engagement public because it was only a matter of time before it came out. “Marriage isn’t something that you can hide.”

The musician, who is currently touring the country, said she was a bit hesitant about sharing the news on her site, but now that it’s done, she has absolutely no regrets.

“A lot of people have thanked me via e-mail, Facebook and my site for coming out. They’ve said that it’s made it easier for them to come out and I guess a lot of good has come from it,” said Lowe.

Lowe added that she hopes that her wedding will change the way people perceive gay relationships.

“I hope that people will become more accepting of gay relationships,” she said. “We live in a society where people aren’t exactly clued up about the idea, so hopefully people will become better informed.”

Meanwhile, although they have not sorted out all of the technicalities regarding their wedding, Lowe believes that with the help of her wedding planner, who specialises in gay weddings, all will fall in place.

“It won’t be a conventional wedding, so there are no rules ... I’d like both my parents to walk me down the aisle because they’ve been so supportive ... We’re feminine women, so we’ll probably wear dresses.”

Lowe, who hails from Durban, said her designer, Terrence Bray, is already sketching a few designs. “I’ve been working with him for years and he gets it right every time.”

The wedding is scheduled to take place in March next year, and Lowe cannot wait to experience the joys of married life — and even motherhood. “We definitely want kids, but I want to experience at least a year or two of married joy before we cross that bridge,” she said with a giggle.
