Melmoth: burglaries up by 50%

2012-10-22 00:00

BURGLARIES in Melmoth have increased by almost 50% in the past six months, said police spokesperson Captain Tienkie van Vuuren.

She said a comparison was made with the same period last year, May to October 2011, and burglaries at residential premises have increased by 45,56%, while burglaries at businesses for the same period showed a decline of seven percent.

“We have been having a problem with burglaries in the Melmoth residential and industrial areas for some time now. This is a matter of concern, and the police are doing everything in their power to prevent and investigate reported cases,” said Van Vuuren.

She said police are now doing frequent patrols and are gathering information from informers.

In the latest spree of burglaries late last week, at least three houses at the caravan park were hit, with one “cleaned out”, according to a resident.

One of the residents, Liza van Tubbergh, said she was struggling to get over the loss of a large part of her household, including clothing, linen and food in addition to valuables.

She said she had lived at the park for nearly four years, and this was the first incident she had experienced.

They have now employed a security guard at the complex.
