Memorial auction: chance to buy scarce wines

2010-10-15 00:00

THE Margate Round Table will host the Stephen Esterhuysen Memorial Wine Auction at the Margate Hotel on the evening of October 28.

The annual event is held in memory of the Round Table member who died of cystic fibrosis in 2002.

The wine on auction will be sourced by Bruce Ruddling of Distell, one of South Africa’s leading producers and marketers of fine wines, spirits and ciders.

The wines will be auctioned in lots, with three to six bottles being sold per lot.

“The occasion provides a great opportunity to buy wines that are not available at local liquor outlets,” said project convener Werner van Dyk.

Much of the money raised at the auction will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Association and other nominated organisations for people with terminal illnesses.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited genetic disease that affects a number of organs in the body, primarily the lungs and pancreas, clogging them with thick, sticky mucus.

Repeated infections and blockages can cause irreversible lung damage and death.

Mucus blocks the tiny ducts of the pancreas that supply enzymes required for digestion, and consequently food is not properly digested and nutritional value is lost in the process.

There is no cure for the disease and most individuals with cystic fibrosis die young.

With the ongoing introduction of new treatments, the life expectancy of a person with cystic fibrosis is increasing to 40 or 50 years.

Tickets to the auction cost R100 per person and are limited to 120 people. Unsold tickets will be available at the door.
