Memories of Madiba in Alan Paton lecture

VERNE Harris will give the 18th Alan Paton Lecture titled “Madiba, Memory and the Work of Justice” on Thursday, May 5, on the Pietermaritzburg campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Harris is head of the Memory Programme at the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Centre of Memory and has been Mandela’s archivist since 2004.

He is an honorary research associate with the University of Cape Town and has participated in a range of structures that transformed South Africa’s apartheid archival landscape, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and is a former deputy director of the National Archives.

Harris led the editorial team on Nelson Mandela: Conversations with Myself. He is the recipient of archival publication awards from Australia, Canada and South Africa while both his novels were shortlisted for the M-Net Book Prize.

The lecture will be at 12.45 for 1 pm in the Colin Webb Hall, Old Main Building. It is presented by the Alan Paton Centre and Struggle Archives.
