Memory of Mlaba honoured

2014-10-27 00:00

ON Saturday, KwaZulu-Natal honoured the memory of Inkosi Msinga Mlaba of KwaXimba, unveiling a memorial in remembrance of his contributions to the liberation struggle.

The ceremony, hosted by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu, was also attended by two former premiers, the newly appointed high commissioner to Australia Sbu Ndebele and Mchunu’s predecessor Zweli Mkhize.

Inkosi Mlaba presided over the KwaXimba tribe during the height of political violence that ravaged the area, especially in the eighties.

During the formation of the United Democratic Front, Mlaba worked closely with Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo as the two bucked the trend where all traditional leaders in the province were required to support the then Bantustan government system.

Maphumulo was the president of the traditional leader organisation Contralesa and had strong ties with the ANC. He was described as a peacekeeper and negotiator during the many struggles at the time.

Mlaba was killed by gunman who attacked him in his house in 1988, while Maphumulo was assassinated in an ambush in 1991.

Mchunu said the memorial for Inkosi Mlaba was erected in the precinct of the sports complex in the area as a reminder of Mlaba’s contribution to fighting for peace and stability in the province. — WR.
