Merc breaks down; time for a new one

2009-11-18 00:00

IS the taxpayer about to pay for yet another flashy car for yet another minister? Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Thandi Tobias-Pokolo is looking to get a new set of wheels after her car broke down recently.

A statement claimed the minister nearly missed her flight to the African, Caribbean and Pacific states Council of Ministers meeting in Brussels on Saturday, blaming the breakdown on the 127 000 km on the speedometer of her 2005 Mercedes Benz E 350, which she inherited from former minister Mandisi Mpahlwa.

Tobias-Pokolo is quoted as saying that “it came as no surprise to me when it started cutting petrol before completely stalling and refusing to go.

“My security was compromised.”

Department spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng told The Witness that after the incident, Tobias-Pokolo said there was a need for a new car.

Mofokeng said she does not know whether the vehicle is serviced regularly, or how much the minister wants to spend.

She asked The Witness to speak to her boss. However, numerous phone calls to Brussels failed to raise her.
