Messages pour in after councillor’s heart bypass

2007-12-05 00:00

Ward 28 councillor Lesley Naidoo’s heart bypass has been a great success and messages from well-wishers have been pouring in.

His wife, Loshini, told The Witness yesterday that her husband is back to his old chirpy self, out of danger and recovering in the high care unit.

“I would like to extend my thanks to the nurses, who have been superb, and all the people who read the article and showed their love and support,” she said.

Hospital manager Christo Becker said the fact that they have done so many successful operations in such a short period of time (51 since the unit opened in June) attests to the need for a cardiac unit in Pietermaritzburg.

“We are delighted to have fulfilled what is obviously a pressing need. At times we may have no cases for two weeks and then suddenly be so busy in the next week or two that it becomes difficult to meet the demand.”

He said they have been able to significantly reduce the time lag between diagnosis and surgery.

“It is also important that patients are able to benefit from the support of their … loved ones. The close proximity of the unit makes that possible,” he said.
