Meter reader van crashes through gate

2014-11-25 00:00

THE last thing an Orient Heights resident expected when she let a municipal meter reader into her yard was for his van to come crashing down through her gate.

Channon Mahabir, a resident in Bayat Road, said the man had walked to her yard from his van that was parked higher up on the road.

Mahabir alleges that when the meter reader was walking out of her driveway, the van started coming down the road at a fast speed. According to her, a woman in the van had decided to move the vehicle closer to the house to pick up her colleague but then lost control.

“I was standing at my window and I just saw the van coming down the road. I heard it screeching and the next thing everything was collapsing,” Mahabir said.

Thick black tyre marks were left on the road as the driver rammed through the fence and down the bank in Mahabir’s front yard.

“The man shouted for the lady to press the brakes but it looked like the van just picked up more and more speed. Apparently, she had no licence. They said they would come back tomorrow with their insurance people to assess the damage,” Mahabir said.

The municipality was unable to respond before the paper went to print.
