Michaelhouse mourns death of teacher

2013-08-20 00:00

MICHAELHOUSE School is mourning the sudden death of one of its mathematics teachers and Pascoe House tutors, Deon Royappen.

Royappen had just finished playing a First League squash match fixture in Eston on Thursday night when he suffered a heart attack.

The head of the mathematics department, Bailey Coxen, wrote on the school’s website: “Deon’s quiet demeanour and hearty laugh will be sorely missed. Nothing was too much for Deon; he would approach all tasks with the same enthusiasm and he carried out his duties in a dignified and professional manner. I have never heard Deon raise his voice or become flustered or irritated. His humility and strength of character are a true mark of a gentleman.”

The school’s rector, Greg Theron, said Royappen joined the staff of Michaelhouse in January 2012. As a competitive squash player, he made a significant contribution to squash coaching at the school. He was also a cricket coach. “The school is in shock at the loss of such a fine young man.

“In his two years with us, Mr Royappen has deeply touched the lives of many boys, within the maths classroom, in Pascoe House and on the sports field. He will be remembered for his great warmth and gentle strength,” Theron said.

He added that they were also sorry to announce the death of Raphael Bhengu, who had worked in the maintenance department at Michaelhouse for many years. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families.”

Royappen leaves behind his wife Asha, head of the drama department at the school, and two young sons.
