Michalak to make Sharks debut against Cheetahs

FREDDIE Michalak, the French flyhalf, will make his Sharks debut against the Cheetahs in the pre-season friendly in Bloemfontein on Friday evening.

Coach Dick Muir said last night that the French Test flyhalf, who is the Sharks’ highest profile signing this season, will “probably play for an hour before we give Frans Steyn a run at flyhalf.”

Muir, announcing a 26-man squad, has named AJ Venter as the captain for Friday’s game, with Springbok lock Johann Muller, who will lead the Sharks in the Super 14, starting on the bench.

“We will play four chukkas in this practise game and we will have 11 players on the bench. The result is not important but we want to see how quickly we can adapt to the new laws and which players show early form,” said Muir.

With Ruan Pienaar on the bench and Rory Kockot one of a number of players nursing a minor injury, Michalak will partner new signing Charl McLeod at halfback.

World Cup players BJ Botha and Albert van den Berg are also in the starting line-up, while amongst those being rested or not considered because of minor niggles are props Deon Carstens, Jannie du Plessis and Pat Cilliers, lock Steve Sykes, hookers Bismarck du Plessis and Craig Burdon, number eight Ryan Kankowski and outside backs Odwa Ndungane and JP Pietersen.
