Midlands: men held for two separate rapes

2012-10-23 00:00

TWO men have been arrested since Friday in connection with separate rapes of elderly women in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

On Friday, a man (29) was arrested in Imbali Unit 18 and was linked with the rape, robbery and assault of a 74-year-old woman almost two months ago.

The woman was raped and attacked in her house in Bisley in August.

A sewing machine, which belonged to the victim, was also found in his possession, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan.

Yesterday, another man (25) suspected of raping an elderly woman in Mambedwini Section in Swayimane outside Wartburg was arrested.

“He has been positively linked to the incident by means of DNA,” said Jeevan.

The woman (82) was at home when the suspect is alleged to have forced his way in and raped her on the evening of July 28.

These arrests follow that of another man suspected of raping a 91-year-old woman in her Hayfields home. He was arrested two weeks ago.

The arrested suspects were expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court shortly, said Jeevan.
