Midlands rugby side make it two from two

2008-09-15 00:00

THE Midlands club rugby team ended their Ebbo Bastard Trophy inter sub-union tournament on a good note at Woodburn this weekend with a 16-11 win over a Durban side after leading 10-3 at half-time.

Coach Dave Look’s line-up added their usual solid performance up front with an equally useful effort behind the forwards in a welcome resurgence for the backlines representing the top three PMB clubs — Varsity, Collegians and Waratahs — that have struggled this season.

The unsung loose forward Leon Olivier — a consistent performer who seldom gets the accolades he deserves — was man of the match with an outstanding outing at number eight.

The introduction of regular fullback Donald Baines at flyhalf also paid off, as he kicked accurately and helped set up another star performer, inside centre Scott Mitchell, for the home side’s lone try.

It was a welcome stimulus for Look and the Midlands regulars after the earlier dismal losses to the Southern and Northern KZN sub-unions’ open teams and last week’s woeful scratching for the trip to meet Zululand in Empangeni.

Meanwhile, in a friendly that served as the curtain-raiser, the Midlands U21 team ended their season on a relative high with a 22-3 win over a Durban sub-union side.

“Although the four-try victory was convincing, the team played far below their potential,” coach and Midlands Rugby Academy manager Steve Botha said yesterday.

Gary Surendorff stood out among the backs, while the consistent Blake Kyd again shone among the Midlands U21 forwards.
