Midnight dash to the sea

2008-05-09 00:00

Midnight. Two degrees Celsius. Underberg. This was the time and the place for the start of the Subaru sani2c Non-Stop last weekend. It was a slog of 205 km between Berg and beach and nearly 100 passionate mountain bikers — comprising teams of three riders plus one second — braved the challenge. Conditions were ideal: a clear, starlight night.

Team Moose — chief route designer Nick Floros, Willie Brink and Peter Smith — rode to victory in 9 hours, 29 minutes and 49 seconds. Second place went to the defending champions, Team Mongoose, comprising Justin and Nicholas Porteous and Jonathan Downham in a time of 10 hours and 23 minutes. Andrew Currie, Richard Lombard and Neil Frazer of Team Rat Pack placed third (10h35.40). The first mixed team (fifth overall) was Shawna Thunder with Piers Morgan and Per Lofstrand.

The last team home, Team Mkhuzane Adventures, took 20 hours and 11 minutes.

Results:

Overall: Team Moose (N Floros, M Smith, W Brink) 9h29.49, Mongoose (J Porteous, N Porteous, J Downham) 10h23.01, Rat Pack (A Currie, R Lombard, N Frazer) 10h35.40.

Mixed: Leigh Group/Bring It On (S Thunder, P Morgan, P Lofstrand) 11h07.30, Sales & Merchandising Specialists (S van Heerden, T Raats, S Manzie) 11h44.01, Whites & Spurg (W White, K White, S Flemington) 12h03.40.
